Enjoy a fantastic flight to the northest capital of Europe

Helsinki (Swedish: Helsingfors) is the capital of Finland. Helsinki, founded in 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden, has been the Finnish capital since 1812. The tsars of Russia rebuilt the city in the style of a small St. Petersburg. Many Cold War movies were filmed in Helsinki, as during those times the Soviet Union did not allow filmmakers to make their movies in St. Petersburg. Helsinki is an interesting mix of an international, multicultural metropolis, while it still has a touch of a small town.

Helsinki gives home to about 605,000 inhabitants, but Greater Helsinki (including Espoo and Vantaa) has a population of over 1.3 million.

Helsinki was founded as an emulator of Tallin, recent capital of Estonia (which was a Danish city in the 16th century), another trading city. In 1809, Finland was annexed by Russia. During this time the capital of Finland was Turku, and then the administrative centre was moved by the Russians to Helsinki in 1812.

Festivals in Helsinki:

- Lux Helsinki, beginning of January. Lux Helsinki is held during the darkest part of the year. There are several light installations to cheer up the residents of Helsinki and also tourists who visit Finland at this dark time of the year.

- Vappu (Walpurgis Night), Apr 30-May 1. Vappu originally is a north European pagan carnival. Students wear different coloured overalls and drink unbelievable amounts of alcohol. It happens that more than 70.000 people show up during the festival.

- Helsinki-päivä (Helsinki Day) is the birthday of the city (12 June). It traditionally starts with the mayor's morning coffee. A variety of concerts, exhibitions, performances and guided tours make this day hectic and memorable.

- Juhannus (Midsummer Festival) is celebrated on Friday, between Jun 19 and Jun 25. Juhannus is the day of the nightless night (the shortest night of the year) and a large bonfire is lit in Seurasaari. However the celebration is low key, as Finnish people traditionally celebrate Juhannus in their summer cottages in the countryside. Even the shops are closed and most streets are empty.

- Taiteiden Yö (Night of the Arts), near the end of August. Actually Taiteiden Yö is the peak of the Helsinki Festival. Locals also call it "little vappu" since the streets are full of revellers and students. The goal of the event is to perform arts during the night. It was first organized by local bookstores.

- Joulu (Christmas). On the last Sunday of November Aleksanterinkatu, the main street and also the longest street of Helsinki, is festively lit up for Christmas.
