The location of London Stansted Airport (IATA: STN, ICAO: EGSS) is at Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex, in northeast direction of Central London.
This airport is the largest base for the low-cost airline Ryanair, the major European low-cost carrier with more than 100 destinations. Almost all of the destinations are in Europe. Stansted’s busiest international destinations are in Ireland, Italy, Poland and Spain. Stansted – the fourth busiest airport in the UK – serves as an important base for other low-cost carriers as well.
Between 1997 and 2007 passengers’ number had a rapid growth at Stansted Airport. The reason of this expansion was the increase of low cost carrier traffic in this period.
Just like many other airports, London Stansted originally opened as a military airfield in 1943 for British and American aircrafts. From the 60s British government intended to develop Stansted into one of the busiest airports around London to relieve Heathrow and Gatwick from the rapidly increasing air traffic. The first terminal building opened in 1969.
London Stansted is the latest built passenger airport of all the main airports around London with a longish glass building terminal. The Terminal has three areas: Check-in and main concourse along the front, Departures towards the back left and Arrivals on the back right upon entry. Instead of gates in the Terminal, there are three separate long-shaped Satellite buildings in which the gates are located; a fourth satellite building is under construction.
Satellite Three has no air gates because the airport’s biggest airline Ryanair prefers to board and disembark with steps. Therefore most Ryanair flights operate at Satellite Three and only Ryanair uses it. The remaining airlines use Satellites One and Two which are equipped with air bridges. Satellite One is the most frequently used Satellite building by Stansted’s other airlines, including EasyJet.
The Terminal has several facilities including bureaux de change, luggage services, internet access, toilets, showers, a chapel and a prayer room. Numerous (more than 60) shops, bars, restaurants and cafés can be used throughout the airport.
The car park system is separated into Long, Mid and Short Stay options along with Valet and Meet and Greet Parking services.
Hotel accomodation facilities are also abundant at Stansted: the Hilton, Premier Inn and Radisson Blu hotels offer their accomodations.
When built Stansted's Air traffic control tower was the tallest one in Britain, located at North-east direction of the airfield just to the South of the Terminal building.
A number of cargo buildings and hangars surround the airfield.
The M11 motorway connects Stansted Airport and northeast London and Cambridge; to Braintree, Colchester and Harwich Stansted is connected by the A120, which is dual-carriageway until Braintree. Transfers2airports.com also offers low cost airport taxi transfers from Stansted Airport to the just mentioned destinations or any part of South-east England.
