Satellite-based onboard Wi-Fi service on Aeroflot flights

aeroflot on-board wi-fiBy the end of 2013 Aeroflot, the Russian airline, will offer wi-fi service on its 26 long-haul airplanes.

Some of the 22 Airbus and 4 Boeing 777 aircrafts will be equipped with the satellite-based on-board wifi in the first quarter of the year.

The in-flight connectivity program is carried out by OnAir, a company known as the global in-flight connectivity services provider. OnAir, a company founded in 2005 and owned by SITA, is using Inmarsat's satellite network for onboard wi-fi.

SITA, the owner of OnAir, is a global IT solutions provider to airlines and also to the Airbus aircraft manufacturer.

Aeroflot was the first Russian airline in 2010, to provide its passengers with wi-fi connection on-board.

Vitaly Saveliev, Aeroflot chief executive, believes that the continous internet access is mainly attractive and important for busines travellers who need to stay connected all the time.

In 2014 further six and in 2015 and 2016 another three-three brand new B777 aircrafts will be equipped with on-board wi-fi.
