Aalst (French: Alost) is a city and municipality along River Dender, 35 kms northwest from Brussels. Its location is in the Flemish province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the city of Aalst itself and several villages: Baardegem, Erembodegem, Gijzegem, Herdersem, Hofstade, Meldert, Moorsel, and Nieuwerkerken. The river Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek traverses the municipality in Aalst and Hofstade. The mayor of Aalst is Christoph D'Haese, from the New-Flemish Alliance party, that is part of the so called Flemish Movement. The town has a long-established feud with Dendermonde (north along the river Molenbeek-Ter Erpenbeek), which dates back from the Medieval times.

The town is famous for its carnival festivities, held every year in February. The celebrating crowd elects a Prince Carnaval, who is entitled to „rule” the city for three days. People walk through the town in a big parade on Sunday, of about 70 groups of costumed volunteers and parade cars. Carnaval Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday (by tradition, the day before Ash Wednesday), is the day of the 'Voil Jeannetten' (literally: "the Dirty Jennies") in Aalst, when men dress as women. The festivities traditionally end with the "Burning of the Doll", on Tuesday evening.
