Amsterdam has a large historic city centre, among the largest ones in Europe, with about 7,000 historic buildings. The street pattern has almost remained the same since the 19th century – the city luckily avoided the destructions of World War II. The city centre consists of 90 islands linked by 400 bridges.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The city gives home for more than a million inhabitants in its urban area, and makes the country’s financial and cultural centre. Amsterdam is known as Venice of the North, due to the lovely canals intersecting the city, its impressive architecture and more than 1,500 bridges. Every traveller can pick up here what he or she likes: culture, history, parties, or just the charm of an old European city.

Amsterdam

Important historic informations

Amsterdam was a small fishing village in the 12th century, then the settlement became one of the largest trading centres in the world when the Dutch Golden Age came in the 17th century. The mediaeval centre rapidly expanded. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Amsterdam expanded in all directions, and many new suburbs were designed in the style of that time.

The Dutch government is seated in The Hague, but Amsterdam always attracted many people from other countries. Today the city has a very diverse ethnographical picture with 178 different nationalities. The city has a liberal policy concerning cannabis and prostitution. Other attractions include the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, the Flower Market, Albert Cuyp Market, and the Vondelpark.

A few informations

The so-called "Amsterdam" that most visitors have in their mind is the city centre, the semi-circle with Central Station at its apex. Generally it covers the same area the city had around 1850. Six major concentric canals ring the Old Centre, together forming the Canal Ring. Other districts of the city centre are the Jordaan, a former working-class district that became upmarket, and Plantage, a green area known for its zoo and botanical gardens. The roads Nassaukade, Stadhouderskade, and Mauritskade mark the location of the former city moat and fortifications. This line marks the city built before 1870.

Amsterdam Canal

The estuary of the river Amstel  is canalised today. If you keep east from Central Station, the railway crosses the artificial islands of the redeveloped Eastern Docklands. North of the IJ is chiefly housing, although a major dockland reconstruction has been started there too.

The river Amstel traverses the city from the south. The dam in the Amstel, which gives the city its name, was located under the present Bijenkorf department store. The town of the early times was on the right bank of the Amstel, where Warmoesstraat is located today: thus it is the oldest street in Amsterdam. The settlement has expanded in all directions, except to the northeast of the ring motorway. That area is a protected rural landscape of spacious fields and nice villages that make a part of the Waterland region.

The radius of the semi-circle is about 2 km. All major sights and most accomodations are inside this line or just outside it. As a result, a large part of Amsterdam is almost never seen by tourists: at least 90% of the population lives outside this area. Most of the city’s economy is located near or outside the ring motorway, which is 4-5 km from the centre.

Without a doubt the most popular district outside of the city centre is the South for its famous museums and gentrified area called 'De Pijp'.
