Beringen

Origins

This area was already settled in Celtic times, as the 1995 archeological finds of gold coins and artifacts shown. These findings date from around 90 BC and also have a peculiarity being the most northerly late-Iron-Age gold objects found in Europe. Documents show that the land of Beringe was attached to the abbey of Corbie by Saint Adelard. Throughout almost the whole medieval period it belonged to the County of Loon, from which it received its city charter in 1239. The city was then surrounded with huge moats and gated walls. The county of Loon was annexed to the Bishoprie of Liège in 1366. Beringen became one of the bishopric’s 23 bonnes villes (principal cities) and play a part of its history until this ecclesiastic district was dissolved in 1795.

Mining past

The first coal-bearing drill cores were obtained in Campine in 1901, and then many coalmines were opened in this territory. The first production in Koersel dates from 1919. The golden age of coal mining commenced right after World War II and lasted until the late 1950s, when less expensive energy sources were made available and popular all over the world. The last coal mine in Beringen was closed on October 28, 1989. The remaining slag heaps and mining buildings can still be seen around the city.

Attractions

The mining museum (an Anchor Point of ERIH, The European Route of Industrial Heritage) is one of Beringen’s main attractions, dealing with the industrial history of this municipality.

There is an excellent system of biking trails here, so this region is a paradise for bikers.

Events

Kermesses take place both in Beringen Paal and in Koersel annually.

At the beginning of every August takes place the "Paal op Stelten", a musical festival in Paal.

The "Koersel Terrast" lasts two days in May: it is a festival of music, dance, and fireworks, so every age-class can find its own amusement.
