Braine-l'Alleud

History in the Middle Ages

Many archaeological finds prove the existence of prehistoric settlements in this area. In the Medieval times the first record of a parish on Braine-l'Alleud's current territory, then called Dudinsart, dates from 1131, when Godfrey I, Duke of Brabant ceded it to the Abbey of Gembloux. The Duke, however, still owned exempt land here, as recorded in a document by Henry I from 1197. Then the name of the municipality assumed the one used in our days. The name itself is derived from “Braine”, former name of the stream that crosses the area (now called the “Hain”), and “alleu”, a medieval French word meaning exempt land. The latter name was to add to the former to distinguish this settlement from two neighbouring ones also called Braine.

Originally the franchise might not have been much more than a right to exercise local administration. By 1489, however, the actual lords of the territory seized complete juridical power on it, and it was still formally part of the fiefdom obtained from the Duke of Brabant.

Battle of Waterloo

In 1815, a part of the Battle of Waterloo was actually fighted on the territory of Braine-l’Alleud. The town’s church of Saint-Etienne became a field hospital.

Sights

The Butte du Lion, erected on the famous Battle of Waterloo, is seen by thousands of tourists every year. A visitor centre in the neighbourhood, a wax museum and a painted panorama also serve as illustrations to trace back the events of Napoleon’s final battle in 1815.

Cardinal Mercier’s former house has been transformed into a tourist information centre, getting a good starting point to explore the town.

Braine-l'Alleud is also home to a (slightly) smaller version of the well-known Manneken Pis, with the name "Il Gamin Quipiche" (the peeing kid).

Folklore

Ophain and Braine-l'Alleud create a carnival every year, with giant puppets like in most other Belgian towns.
