Origins

Significant artifacts from the La-Tène period has been digged out in Appels, which means that this region of the Scheldt was inhabited even in prehistoric times. Grave sites from the 2nd and 6th century also indicate that this region was settled in Gallo-Roman and Merovingian times. In 843, the Treaty of Verdun placed Dendermonde in Lotharingia. When the Norman troops invaded this territory in 883, however, Baldwin II took over the region and incorporated it into the German part of the then newly founded County of Flanders.

Recent history

Strong industrial progress – particularly of cotton industry – took place in the second half of the 18th century, giving a significant prosperity to this area. At the beginning of the 19th century the port facilities were modernized and the first railways were laid down, therefore other industries (oil, shoe, leather…) were able to advance. The breakdown of World War I in September 1914 had catastrophic consequences to the city, because more than half of its housing and the city archives were either bombed or burned down. Today, the city is an administrative, commercial, educational, and medical centre for the surrounding region.

Attractions

The béguinage is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

The city hall and belfry have also been designated a World Heritage Site since 1999. The belfry has a carillon and formerly belonged to the Cloth Hall.
