Attractions

The most important tourist attraction of Genk is Bokrijk, which is an open-air museum of authentic relocated buildings (built between the 17th and 19th century) from all over Flanders. In the summer season, Flanders people of historic significance are impersonated by many actors and re-enactment events here.

The city of Genk is a "gateway" to the Hoge Kempen National Park, which is the first National Park in Flanders.

The old coalmines of Zwartberg, Waterschei and Winterslag, surrounded by huge black hills of dug up soil and coal remnants should be remembered among the attractions of the city’s environment. Some of the mine buildings and housing can be seen by visitors.

Despite its industrial past and present, Genk is known by Belgian people as 'De Groene Stad' (The Green City). It has a nature reserve called "De Maten", the extensive recreational area Kattevennen (with the Europlanetarium), Bokrijk, and several other green areas. In sunny weather, the Sundial Park is also worth being visited (Dutch: Zonnewijzerpark).

The Europlanetarium Genk has a planetarium and observatory.

Events

Genk hosts the Motives Festival, which takes place in every November and celebrates "new sounds of jazz”. Another musical event, Genk on Stage, takes place during three days in the summer.

The traditional festivities of Genk should also be mentioned: the eventful carnival takes place around Ash Wednesday; the May celebrations featuring the May Queen; a flowers parade and a huge fireworks finale; and the Saint Martin procession, in honour of Saint Martin of Tours, one of the most popular saints in Flanders.

In 2012 Genk was host to Manifesta, that is „The roving European Biennial of Contemporary Art”. Manifesta is one of the forerunning art events of Europe which has as much weight in artistic life as the biennial of Venice and the Documenta in Kassel.
