Attractions

The magnificent church of the Grimbergen Abbey was founded in 1128. This sanctuary has been dedicated to St. Servatius, who is the patron saint of the city. The edifice was rebuilt many times since its foundation. Visitors now can see a church that was lastly reconstructed in 1660. The sight of the edifice is very harmonious. The proportions of the construction show a majestic Baroque building. In the tower there is a 49-bell carillon.
The edifices surrounding the central square in front of the church have also been rebuilt in the original style of the 18th century. In 1999 this magnificent church has got the title of a basilica.

The Grimbergen beer museum is nearby. Visitors are welcome to have a try of the world- famous local brew.
The oldest public astronomical observatory in Belgium can be found here, in an area formerly belonged to the abbey’s properties.

Given its extension, this administrative uniot has relatively numerous – that is four – castles on its territory. One of the most spectacular is the breath-taking 17th century Renaissance-style Guldendal. The ruins of the lords of Grimbergen's old keep now named the Prinsenkasteel is also very famous. Quite a few old farms show the 17th century way of rural life for visitors, as well as two medieval water mills.

Events

The most important annual event is the Sint-Servaasommegang, loosely translated as procession of Saint Servatius. This procession has its beginning in 1280 and takes place on the Saint's birthday, May 13, or on the first following Sunday.

A well-attended kermesse takes place on the first Sunday of September.

A nativity scene is arranged in the abbey church around Christmas.

Sports

The main football club used to be K.F.C. Strombeek, but is now named F.C. Molenbeek Brussels Strombeek and located in neighboring Sint-Jans-Molenbeek.
