Hasselt is a city and municipality in Belgium, and the capital of the Flemish province of Limburg. The Hasselt municipality comprises the city of Hasselt itself, and the old settlements of Sint-Lambrechts-Herk, Wimmertingen, Kermt, Spalbeek, Kuringen, Stokrooie, Stevoort and Runkst, as well as the hamlets and parishes of Kiewit, Godsheide and Rapertingen.
Hasselt gives home to a population of about 72,000 inhabitants. Both the river Demer and the Albert Canal traverses the municipality. Hasselt’s neighbouring regions are the Campine region, north of the Demer, and the Hesbayeregion, south of it (Dutch Kempen and Haspengouw). It also belongs to the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.
Hasselt is makes a crossroads important traffic arteries from different directions. The most important motorways are the European route E313 (Antwerp-Liège) and the European route E314 (Brussels-Aachen). Hasselt itself is encircled by 2 ring roads. The outer ring serves to keep traffic out of the city centre and main residential areas. The inner ring, called "Green Boulevard", is to keep traffic out of the commercial centre, which is almost completely a pedestrian area. There are also important routes to Tongeren, Sint-Truiden, Maastricht, Genk, Diest and Eindhoven.
The city lies within approximately an hour's drive from the airports of Brussels, Liège, Maastricht-Aachen, Antwerp, Cologne-Bonn,Düsseldorf and Charleroi. Within a three hour radius, the major hubs of Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Paris can be reached. Private aircraft can use the airfield of Kiewit, which is in the Hasselt area.

Sevaral events are organized in the Ethias Arena, which is the largest arena in the country.
Kiewit is the scene of the yearly Pukkelpop (Pimplepop) festival, one of Europe's biggest alternative music festivals with over a hundred concerts, at the end of August. Rimpelrock (Wrinklerock), a festival with older music, is held at the same place, one week earlier every year.
As in most towns in Belgium and the nearby catholic countries, there is an annual Kermesse, on a date when the local church's patron saint is celebrated. In this case this is Saint Lambert, so the event takes place in September.
The Virga Jesse festival, featuring a procession of a very old wooden statue of infant Jesus with Mary, is celebrated every seven years, most recently in August 2010.
Hasselt celebrates Carnival, but at a bit different date than most places.
