Kortrijk (Cortoriacum) is a city in the Flemish region of Belgium. The city is the capital of the arrondissement of Kortrijk, this latter comprising the city of Kortrijk proper and the villages of Aalbeke, Bellegem, Bissegem, Heule, Kooigem, Marke, and Rollegem.
The city has numerous historical monuments and and façades which give a very nice atmosphere to the settlement. All are worth seeing.
The original settlement was a gallo-roman oppidum called Cortoriacum. During medieval times the city gained considerable riches due to the flax and wool industry. In historic books Kortrijk is often mentioned as City of Groeninge or City of the Golden Spurs, which is a reference to the Battle of Courtrai or the Battle of the Golden Spurs on 11th July 1302 on the Fields of Groeninge in Kortrijk.
In recent times Kortrijk has become the largest city in southern West-Flanders. The largest part of the historical city center is a pedestrian area with plenty of shops and shopping malls.
