Interesting historic informations

According to archeological excavations La Roche has been settled from a very ancient time, which is the Neolithic era. There is an Celtic archaeological site going back to about between 850 and 520 BC. When Julius Caesar conquered the province of Gallia and the Gallic tribes settled in the Ardennes a Roman fortress was built here.

Places of interest

The castle of the village first built in the 9th century AD by Rupes Seremani, a vassal of the Duke of Lotharingia. In 1331, permission to build city walls was given by John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Poland and a Count of Luxembourg. It was reconstructed in the 15th century. This reconstruction was a strengthening against firearms. When Louis the 14th occupied the stronghold in 1681 and kept it for 16 years the castle was reconstructed again into a then modern fortress. The castle of La Roche was abandoned by Austrian Emperor Joseph II, and fell into decay in the 19th century.
