Historic attractions

The history of the city of Sint-Niklaas commenced in 1217; at that time the bishop of Tournai founded a church to Saint Nicholas here, by the advice of the local clergy.

Therefore the Church of Saint Nicholas gave its name to the city. The church suffered a serious damage in the 16th century, so the interior was reconstructed in the Baroque style.

The Chapel of Saint Joseph was built in the 17th century by the Franciscans. Later this chapel had been integrated into a minor seminary; today it is a part of a high school.

The Church of Our Lady and Town Hall, located on the market square mentioned before, was built in the 19th century.

Sint Niklaas Town Hall

The Gerardus Mercator Museum is a treasure house of  the history of cartography. Maps and globes can be seen here even from the very origin of cartography. The museum also houses two original globes owned by the famous cartographer Gerardus.

Other churches and museums include: Saint Joseph, Christ the King, Salon for Fine Arts and Zwijgershoek

Events

On the first weekend of every September there is an international balloon meeting (Vredesfeesten) here, and a music festival (Villa Pace) that lasts for 3 days.

In the very end of the year, the Flanders Volley Gala, an international volleyball tournament is organized in Sint-Niklaas.

The city keeps seven giants: Janneken, Mieke, Santa Claus and Zwarte Piet, and the three Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar.
