Belgian Grand Prix

The Belgian Grand Prix of the Formula One World Championship is held at Spa-Francorchamps. Car and motorrcycle racing at this region goes back to the beginning of the history of motorization and racing. The first national race of Belgium was held here in 1925. The „Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps” race course was built in 1921, and it was made suitable for Grand Prix racing. Racing begun with motorcycle racing only, and in 1924, following the 1923 success of the new 24 hours race of Le Mans in France, a similar 24-hour endurance race called „Spa 24 Hours” was run at the Spa track.

From the outset Spa-Francorchamps has been had a bad reputation for its unpredictable weather. At a stage in the race course’s history it had rained at the Belgian Grand Prix for twenty consecutive years. Drivers often need to cope with abrupt turns of clear and bright parts with rainy and slippery stretches.

The Belgian Grand Prix was qualified the European Grand Prix six times between 1925 and 1973. This title was an honorary designation given each year to one grand prix race in Europe. It is a very popular race on the Formula One calendar, because the scenic and historical Spa-Francorchamps circuit attracts drivers and fans as well.
