Vilvoorde (French: Vilvorde) is a municipality in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. This administrative unit comprises the city of Vilvoorde itself, and its two outlying quarters, namely Koningslo and Houtem, and the small town of Peutie. The nickname of the local people is Pjeirrefretters (horse eaters) because horse meat (especially steak) is a most favourite food in this district.

The official language of the administrative unit of Vilvoorde is Dutch. 20 per cent of the inhabitants speak French, and this population lives mainly in the Koningslo quarter next to Brussels. This minority has of course its representatives on the 33-seat local council: 3 members. Other peculiriaty of the city is its relatively large Spanish minority. This minority has its home especially in the city centre, where the proportion of people of Spanish nationality is 10 per cent. If we take the people of Spanish origin this proportion is even greater. Most of them immigrated after World War II, from Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo in Andalusia. Moreover, the city also has a large Moroccan community, and many smaller communities of more recent immigrants including Turks, Macedonians and Portuguese.

Places of attraction

The neo-classical city hall and a covered market hall are in the city centre.

The statue of a Brabant horse: as a symbol it brings back the times of the long lasting tradition of horse trading in Vilvoorde.

The Kijk-Uit house: built in the 15th or in the 16th century.

Several beautiful churches, including the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady). The construction of this latter started in the 14th century, and the basilica of Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-ten-Troost (Our Lady of Consolation), built in the 17th-century Baroque style, with the cloister of the Carmelites.

In Vilvoorde there are numerous and nice parks, such as the Hanssenspark with English gardens and the Domein Drie Fonteinen (the "Domain of the Three Fountains"), which has both English and French gardens.

The Vilvoorde Viaduct, part of the Brussels beltway.

Events

Like many other settlements in Belgium, Vilvoorde has a week-long carnival, organized every year in the week of Shrove Tuesday (end of February - beginning of March).
Annually on the third Monday following Easter, a very popular yearly market ("jaarmarkt") is held with many competitions and exhibitions of farm animals (horses, cows, poultry), and which coincides with the start of the yearly, week-long fair with many attractions for children.
