Get a low cost taxi transfer to the memorial town of WWI

Ypres is a town in the Flemish region of Belgium, with a population of about 36,000 inhabitants. The battles of Ypres in WWI went down in history, and are taught worldwide. Due to these rather tragical historic events, there are numerous war memorials and cemeteries in and around Ypres that attract many visitors each year.

During the First World War the town was of vital importance for the Allied. According to this fact heavy bombardments ruined the town of Ypres almost to the ground. Most of central Ypres was rebuilt with the money paid by Germany as a war debt. It took a long time: the famous Cloth Hall was only finished in the 1960s.

Landmarks and Memorials

Menin Gate Memorial – a memorial to British and Commonwealth soldiers who fell in Belgium during WWI.
This memorial can be taken as a symbol of the unmarked graves of the 54,896 British officers and men who died in the Ypres Salient area. The names of these lost warriors are carved into huge panels.
Further 34,984 names of lost soldiers - died between 16th August, 1917 and the end of the war – are carved into panels at Tyne Cot Cemetery, on the slopes just below Passchendaele.

Cloth Hall - built around 1200 as a symbol of Flemish wealth. The Cloth Hall was razed to the ground by German artillery shelling in 1916, and the reconstruction lasted quite a long time: the project was completed in 1962.

Museums and Galleries

In Flanders Fields Museum – Ypres Cloth Hall, right in the center. This museum gives a view about the soldiers’ and civilians’ everyday life during the war. This may be a shocking experience of the horrors of war. Open daily April - September 10AM-6PM, open Tue-Sun October - March 10AM-5PM, last entry 1 hr before closing.
An interesting festival – the Kattenstoet. This festival is held every third year on the second Sunday of May. It revives a local tradition which goes back to the Middle Ages, in which tradition cats were thrown from the belfry tower of the Cloth Hall to the town square below, following an imitated witch burning. Today a jester throws stuffed toy cats down to the crowd, while the people are trying to catch one.
