Espoo is only 30 minutes drive from Helsinki Airport.

Espoo (Sweedish: Esbo) is the second largest city in Finland. The city of Espoo has nearly 260,000 inhabitants. Espoo is in the close vicinity of Helsinki, Kauniainen, Vantaa Nurmijärvi, Vihti and Kirkkonummi. The city is on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, in Uusimaa region.

The municipality has a famous national park, called Nuuksio, situated in the northwest part of the city.

The city proper is divided into seven areas: Vanha-Espoo, Suur-Espoonlahti, Pohjois-Espoo, Suur-Kauklahti, Suur-Leppävaara, Suur-Matinkylä and Suur-Tapiola.

Espoo is a bilingual city, only 83.6% of the population speaks Finnish as their native tongue. 8.3% speaks Swedish and 8% has a first language other than Finnish or Swedish.

The city’s name might be derived from the Swedish name for the River Espoo (Espå or Espåå). The banks of the River Espoo were flanked with aspens in the Middle Ages (the old Swedish „äspe” means aspen, while the „å” stands for „river”). So the city’s name means „a river lined with aspens”. The name Espoo was first mentioned in 1431.

Espoo is famous for its Museum of Modern Art (EMMA), the Museum of Horology and a Toy Museum. The Espoo Cultural Centre is located in Tapiola. Museums in Espoo are as follows: Espoo City Museum, EMMA - Espoo Museum of Modern Art, The Gallen-Kallela Museum, The Helinä Rautavaara Museum, The Finnish Toy Museum, The Finnish Museum of Horology, Espoo Automobile Museum.

There are several manors in the city. Two of them are open to the public. One of these public manors is called Espoon kartano and the other is Pakankylän kartano.

There’s always something to do in Espoo in your spare time. Thanks to its geographical location, the city has nearly 60 kilometres of shoreline and 95 lakes. There are 11 beaches by the Gulf of Finland and 10 beaches by a lake. The beaches are cleaned daily.

Ice swimming is very popular during the winter season. There are eight different places for this activity in Espoo (Espoonlahti (Soukka Klobben), Haukilahti, Kallvik, Kivenlahti, Laajalahti, Matinkylä, Oittaa Recreation Centre, Pitkäjärvi). Six of the ice swimming holes are located on the seashore. The holes in the ice are kept unfrozen throughout winter and there are heated changing rooms.

Recreation Islands: there are frequent boat lines departing from the Otaniemi and Kivenlahti harbours to transport passengers to the outdoor recreation islands of Iso Vasikkasaari, Gåsgrundet, Rövaren and Stora Herrö.
