Bled is a town in Slovenia, on the east side of Lake Bled. The town is a popular travel destination in the country due to its romantic scenery and to being a starting point to Triglav National Park, which offers numerous outdoor adventure opportunities. The town’s characteristic sights are a white church on an island in the middle of an emerald green mountain lake, and Bled Castle perched high above, amidst the Julian Alps.

Outdoor activities

On foot

Bled is very easy to rove over on foot. A walk around the lake takes a little more than an hour.

By pletna

The standard way to get to the lake's island is taking a pletna boat, which resembles a huge gondola. The whole trip takes 90 minutes, including 60 minutes of rowing and 30 minutes stay on the island. There are several departure places of pletnas around the lake.

By rowboat

It is very popular to rent a rowboat to get to the island church. The rental shops are beneath the castle, and near the activity centre at the west shore of the lake.

By bicycle

Bled and its neighbourhood offer an excellent opportunity for riding bicycles, which can be rented at many outdoor agencies. There are no designated bike lanes in Bled. Cycling off-road or off-track is not allowed in Slovenia. A list of suggested bike routes is available at the tourist information centre or the internet.

By horse

Horses can also be rented at most outdoor agencies. Besides, horse drawn carriages are available for rides around the lake, with destinations to the castle or further afield.

Sights

Lake Bled. Tha lake has been formed after the recession of the Bohinj glacier at the end of the Ice Age. Its lengthis 2120 m, while its largest width is 1380m. The lake has a maximum depth of 30.6m. Having no natural tributaries, it is fed by a few springs.

The current form of the castle built in the 17th century and was restored in the 1950s. From the castle terrace a breathtaking view can be enjoyed to the lake and island.

Bled Island. Its archeological remains of a pre-Romanesque Chapel and a large Slavic cemetary date back to the 9th century.
